Ultimate Sailors Camera Panasonic LUMIX G85

Over the last three months or using the camera almost continuously, I have abused my LUMIX G85 camera like no other I have owned and taken it in the rain and snow unprotected in any way. The fantastic weather sealing, modern touch screen with intuitive interface and compact size make this the perfect travel camera for sailors. Also the interface is lightning fast compared to any camera I have used; it makes the Cannon 5D Mark III feel slow... this camera can focus and take the picture before my Canon camera is done focusing....it is that fast. The touch screen is amazing and fun to use showing a live histogram; the electronic view finder is absolutely amazing in providing the same view as the touch screen and allowing you to pick the focus point using the touchscreen while looking through the EVF; makes picking the focus point so much more instinctive and dynamic...absolutely wonderful. Also, you can take pictures while you are taking video without it interrupting the video or making any sound which is a wonderful advantage.
I have been a Cannon user for over 10 years, owning all the 5D models in cluding the Mark III and 5DS, which are excellant studio cameras. The biggest advantage of the full frame SLR is low light and the nice background blur. But I can put a inexpensive prime on the G85 and nearly match the cannon and have all the benefits of a light and compact package that I am more likely to carry. Also, I would never take the chance and expose these more expensive cameras to the saltwater conditions typically found on a sailboat. The best fottage is taken when the weather is bad, and the G85 lets me worry about getting the shot rather than protecting an expensive camera. I can buy 4 G85s with the kit lens for the cost of the 5DS and f2.8 24-70 MII lens I typically used....
On board, everything needs a backup and I will be purchasing a second G85 before the Spring cruising season starts to have that B camera plus a couple prime lenses and still carry less weight than the single Canon...
Hope you enjoyed this review and that it helps you make the right decision for your needs.
